No vacation plans? No problem.
Plenty of folks enjoy Labor Day Weekend as a chance to flock to the beach one last time before summer comes to a close or even head to a mountain hideaway for some peace and quiet. But if you didn’t decide to make big travel plans for this favorite fall holiday, there’s no need to feel like you’re missing out. Here are five ways to make the most out of your staycation today before sliding into your four-day workweek.
1. Whip up a fancy breakfast for yourself.
You know that drool-worthy recipe you’ve been eyeing but haven’t committed to making yet because it’s time-intensive and requires ingredients you don’t always have on hand? Well, today is the day to indulge both your taste buds and lack of a schedule. Slip into some comfy clothes and head to the market to pick out your fresh ingredients. Then spend the morning playing in the kitchen, and maybe even tune into one of your favorite playlists while you cook. When it comes time to savor your creation, really savor it. Appreciate each flavor, each ingredient and each minute you dedicated to making this crave-worthy meal for yourself.
2. Go for a nature stroll — without your phone.
After tidying up the kitchen, slide on your favorite sneakers and head outside sans technology. You don’t have to set out with a certain path or walking pace in mind — this isn’t about having a plan or getting in a certain level of exercise. It’s simply a chance for you to wander among Mother Nature, enjoy the fresh air and follow whatever piques your interest. You could walk around your neighborhood for 20 minutes or follow a winding trail for two hours. Whatever you do, do it with intention and a sense of gratitude.
3. Grab that novel you’ve been meaning to read all summer long.
Once you make it home, take things down a notch by heading to your bookshelf, finding that book you have yet to finish and settling into your favorite seat in the house for some good, old-fashioned reading time. Regardless of whether you enjoy mystery thrillers or historical fiction, give yourself the time (again, away from your phone) to just immerse yourself in a storyline that has nothing to do with you or your responsibilities. Take pleasure in remembering how it feels to get lost in the pages of a good book.
4. Take a midday snooze.
We don’t know about you, but afternoon book time often leads to afternoon nap time. There’s just something so soothing about the peace and quiet and the beautiful lull a good story can create in your mind. (Plus, when else do you get the chance to take a nap these days?) So if you find your eyes growing heavy as you turn the pages, don’t hesitate to let that book fall to your lap and simply rest. Giving in to what your body is requesting of you is one of the best ways to take advantage of a day like today. It’s in these moments that we heal and rejuvenate for weeks to come.
5. Invite some friends over for a summer dinner spread.
We know you’re not the only person who decided to stay local today, so give your pals a call and see if they have any evening plans. Then gather together to whip up a fun meal full of summertime classics — gazpacho, grilled corn on the cob, chicken and pepper skewers and some fresh, spiced peaches for dessert. Ending your holiday on a social note with people you love after enjoying a peaceful day to yourself is one of the best ways to create balance in your staycation. Oh, and don’t forget the wine. It is a holiday after all.
